RRD’s POS roll solution yields fewer roll changes, removes harmful phenol chemicals for leading electronic retailer
CHALLENGE
When a global consumer electronics retailer discovered their current point-of-sale (POS) receipt paper was not phenol-free, they sought to secure a replacement. The retailer required phenol-free POS rolls in order to be in compliance with legislation banning (or on the verge of banning) BPA and other bisphenols in California, Washington State, and other U.S. regions.
BPA and bisphenol bans in POS receipts are designed to regulate chemicals that can pose significant health risks to the public.
The retailer sought a POS roll solution that would satisfy the phenol-free requirement and provide timely supply. An equally important consideration was that the new POS rolls be competitively priced.
SOLUTION
RRD, a long-time partner, was entrusted to provide a solution. Following initial discussions with the retailer to ascertain their requirements and priorities, RRD also confirmed which size POS roll would fit their stores’ printers. Sample rolls were provided to ensure a larger-diameter roll could be accommodated.
Ultimately, the retailer selected an RRD POS roll solution that was BPA- and phenol-free, satisfying their requirements and ensuring they would not come into conflict with current or forthcoming legislation. In addition, because it’s a stock solution, sourcing would not prove a concern now or in the future. The POS roll solution was also well accommodated within the client’s budget.
Because the new POS rolls are longer than the retailer’s former option, each roll now provides 16% more receipt paper than the retailer’s previous roll. Stores now need to change POS rolls less frequently, meaning fewer disruptions at customer checkout.
Additionally, the rolls are produced at a centrally located RRD facility and bulk-shipped on a monthly basis, directly to the company’s retail store locations across the U.S.
RESULTS
RRD, through diligence and proactiveness, was able to fulfill the retailer’s requirements for replacement POS receipt paper that was BPA- and phenol-free. Specific results included:
- With the new receipt solution, retailers can confidently meet all recent regulatory requirements
- The 273-ft. rolls are 16% longer than the retailer’s former POS receipt paper — yielding fewer roll changes and interruptions at the cash register
- The longer length, combined with the POS paper’s base price, provides the retailer with an annual savings of over $100,000 compared to their previous paper
- As a stock item, the new POS paper is supply chain-resilient
