RRD’s encapsulated, multi-page booklet label supports cross-border compliance, durability, and material consistency
CHALLENGE
A worldwide provider of diagnostic kits was faced with complying with new global regulations for hazardous products. The required guidelines had to be printed in dozens of languages, and they needed to appear on the exteriors of their shipping boxes.
The company, with facilities in the U.S. and Europe, stipulated that production be done in-region to minimize supply chain risks, avoid additional shipping costs, and ensure short lead times. Furthermore, they required that all utilized materials be the same or equivalent across both the U.S. and Europe to support uniform quality and performance.
SOLUTION
RRD, a long-time partner, was entrusted to develop a label solution — leveraging their product development capabilities, along with US and European operations and supplier network. RRD devised and tested multiple solutions that would address the company’s various requirements.
Ultimately, for the printed regulations, RRD designed a multi-page leaflet capable of accommodating all language versions, with expansion potential for additional languages. The leaflet was produced on a thin, lightweight paper, ensuring it would lay flat when applied to the shipping box. To safeguard the leaflet from rain, humidity, and other adverse conditions, it was encapsulated within a pressure-sensitive booklet label.
In addition, RRD engineered a solution enabling the leaflet to be permanently adhered to the base label — not simply inserted. This feature, requested by the client, prevents the leaflet from falling out and being lost upon opening. The resealable label was adhered to the shipping box with permanent adhesive.
RESULTS
RRD’s booklet and label solution satisfied all of the company’s criteria for functionality, scalability, equivalency, and supply resilience. The project launched in the U.S. in 2026 and will launch in the EU in early 2027. Specific results included:
- Extended space — the multipage leaflet ensures all of the required regulatory content in various languages is accommodated and is legible, and allows for additional languages to be added
- Reduced costs — the leaflet eliminates the need to print separate labels for each language
- Environmental robustness — encapsulation of the label, placed on the shipper box exterior, enables the leaflet to withstand environmental conditions
- Material consistency — RRD’s US and European operations, in conjunction with the RRD supplier network, enables localized production that meets the same specs and label performance
